(Perhaps some of this is a regional issue. Apparently, Truvada is not available in many countries outside the U.S. I talk to a lot of guys visiting from Europe, who have not even heard about it.)

@Dave Cullen Truvada/Prep is more than likely NOT 100% effective. The way you use it depends on its percentage of effectiveness. So one pill will not cut it to get a percentage that high. And there is this from the CDC who says it can be UP TO 92% effective. Remember, that 99/100% effectiveness is based on statistical analysis NOT actual experimentation or trial runs.

And a condom does more than prevent HIV infection, it also prevents other std infections like gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia. Also if you’re lucky, herpes and genital warts.

@SXG, the CDC page is based on very old data. The 92% figure was used by the FDA when they approved it nearly 3 years ago. Since then, 3-5 more major studies have been published. (I lost track of how many.)
The 99% you refer to WAS based on a statistical analysis, but that’s also well over a year old. Did you read abstract I linked in The Lancet? It’s one of the most prestigious peer-reviewed medical journals in the world. It concluded 100 (if used 4 days a week or more, and you should be doing 7 days), and it IS based on trial runs. (BTW, the statistical model was also based on actual trials–there was just insufficient data from a single trial. But now with a multitude of studies, there is.)
Not a single person in any of the studies taking it 4 days a week has converted.
That is a record condoms have never come close to.
(As to your first point, of course taking a single pill does not bring you up to 100% effectiveness. It’s not designed that way. It’s designed to be taken daily, and it has to build up in your system over the first 4 days or so to reach maximum effectiveness.)
The big problem is adherence. Most people in the studies were NOT taking it every day as they should.
So if porn stars are not actually taking Truvada, they are being unsafe, whether or not they have a prescription for it.
I’m sure some are being unsafe. That’s really stupid of them.
