Ricky recently published an article The Problem with ‘Gay for Pay’ where he discusses this infamous topic.
Fans and bloggers often seem personally betrayed when they learn that a popular gay porn star is dating a woman off-camera. Their logic tells them that a man can’t possibly be sexually attracted to his own gender if he’s dating the opposite sex “in real life.” Such narrow-minded “thinking” fails to recognize the many variations of sexual attraction and expression.
Despite how far we’ve come in the fight for sexual equality, we’ve yet to acknowledge that there are many shades of lust, and many degrees of sexual attraction that can fluctuate throughout our lives.
What about the performer who identifies as “gay” but isn’t the least bit attracted to (or is even completely turned off by) his scene partner? He goes through the motions anyway and collects his check, never experiencing a second of pleasure during the scene. Is he a more authentic performer than the man who truly enjoys having sex with his male costar but is dating a woman in real life?
What about the big, muscular, hairy guy who’s hired to play an aggressive, dominant top, even though he’s a submissive bottom in real life? If he “fakes” his way through the scene, should he be crucified on blogs for “cheating the gay porn audience” and “stealing their money”?

The problem is not that some performers in gay porn date women, it is the whole disgusting homophobic marketing angle of “Gay-For-Pay.”
I am perfectly fine with the idea of a wide range of sexual orientations. I am gay, but I have friends off all different sexual orientations. I have many very close female friends, and I do not find heterosexual sex “gross.” I have had sex with a few woman, and I had good experiences, but I simply happen to be gay and I am truest to myself in a same-sex relationship. So, the issue for me, and I think most gay men upset about “gay for pay,” is not that some male performers in gay porn date women.
No, the problem is that studios trade off a lot of self-loathing and self-hatred in the gay community. They market “straight” men (whether they really are straight or not) as the ultimate object of desire for gay men and the unattainable status that gay men should strive for. Gay men are are sent the clear message that being gay is wrong, disgusting, and pathetic, and that if we cannot be straight, then the best we can hope for is to have some straight guy deign to have sex with us for money. It is a hateful and hurtful stereotype, and many studios make big bucks off of it because too many gay men have such low self-esteem and high insecurity about their sexual orientation.
The proper way to make “gay-for-pay” a non-issue is for these studios to STOP marketing the supposed heterosexuality (whether its real or not) of their performers as a come on to get consumers to buy their films. If someone identifies as straight and happens to want to make a gay film, fine, more power to them. And, I have no problem with them mentioning a wife or female partner if it comes up naturally (and not part of some planned marketing strategy in an interview. However, the fact that they are straight should not be used as a marketing device to sell porn. Just let them perform and leave it at that. People will stop making a big deal about “gay for pay” when studios stop trading off homophobia to sell films.

Pure physical attraction. Is that bad? no. Is negativity within judgement of a persons personal life bad? yes. Acting gay and Acting straight is a thing. Did i say it was bad? No. Society just automaticly gives these stereotypes a bad connotation as a instant line of defensiveness. There’s nothing wrong with acting gay or straight, But many people are so quick to get offended they don’t even take the time to think about if malicious intent was involved or not.
Saying “EVERY gay guy” or “ALL gays” is a mass generalization which, of course is not true and sticking by said logic is quite ignorant.
